Week 1

Week 1:

We were given an assigenment this week to create a music video. Today we made our groups for our musc video. We must submit production documents which will include pre production and a sample viewing which we can do via a questionaire. We will need to make sure that our music video is suitbale for viewing within the time watershed (before 9:00pm).

Our video must be suitable for pre-watershed viewing, this means that it should not contain any explicit lyrics, un-suitable scenes such as drugs, sex or excessive violence. It must also include motion graphics, be a maximum of 4 minutes long (inc motion graphics). We are given a choice of pre-approved songs which were provided by our lecturer or, if we want to use our own song, get clearance to use an existing artist’s song. Our song was already on the list which was walking on a dream by empire of the sun, and we began to think of the possibilities for this song.

Week 2:

This week i began and finished my Music video investigation. i wrote about the different styles and types of music videos (e.g. Homage, Stop Motion), different techniques (e.g. Chroma Key, Lip syncing) and different codes and conventions (e.g. Consolidating a songs meaning, lyric interperatation. I had a group meeting with my group and we decided that we were in fact going to use the song "Walking on a Dream" by "Empire of the Sun". At first, myself and another group member wanted to do another song which was "Shot Yourself in the Foot Again" by "Example". We spoke to our lecturer and asked him for advice on what would be easier to do and what he reccomends, to which he thought the "Empire of the Sun" song would have been a better choice, so we decided to go with that.

Skills Profile

I am creatng a skills profile of what i have learnt for my music video assignment. I will be using these techinques that i have learnt in the music video. I have already aquired a lot of skills over the 2 year course.

Some skills i have learn on the course, include:


  • Getting more familiar with editing programmes such as Adobe Flash, Adobe Premiere etc.
  • Working within groups and teams.
  • Pre production
  • Image editing
  • Camera work
  • More knowledge of Media

Some skills that i have not learnt or not fully leanrt, and that i would like to be able to achieve by the end of the course are:

  • More understanding of music video techniques
  • More understanding of the music industry
  • Better skills within Photoshop
  • Better skills within Premiere
  • Better skills when communicating within groups

2D Animation Investigation

I will be investigating origins of the moving images: pionears and techniques eg. Joeseph Plateau (phenakitoscope), William Horner (zoetrope), Emile Reynaud (praxinoscope), Edward Muybridge, Edison (kinetoscope), Lumiere brothers.

I investigated each of the inventors and wrote about what they invented and what it exactly does. I gained a better expereince of what and how the inventors invented there products and how succsful they became.

I watched demonstration videos/animations of the zoetrope being used and also the phenakitoscope.

1st week after christmas:

This was the first week after christmas. We were given the brief of our next assignment by our lecturer which was to make a music video. I began working on my investigation into music videos and started to reseach different types of video genres (pop, rock, alternative etc).

Simons Lesson

In simons lesson today, we learnt about differnt styles of factual programmes and looked at variouis types of documentarys. I wrote down notes about the documentarys and we discussed what types they were, e.g. talking heads, exloritary. We finished our productiuon schedule and chart.

Today in Simons lesson, i continued my investigation into factual programmes. updating it and tweaking it. We looked at a video on YouTube of an animation of a clown which i thought was quite interesting and factual.

Max Taylor

I am learning how to make a factual programme on my second year of Imedia.

Week 1:

In week 1 we were getting back to the routine of starting college. We discused what our first assignment would be and found out that it is to make a factual programme. Our lecturer gave us numbers and we were put into our groups which consisted of either 2 or 3 people within them. In my group was myself, Lisa and Ashleigh. We started making the production schedule and decided who would do what within the production.

Week 2:

During the second week we were told to make changes to our original production scehdule as we all missed out a significant part of it which was the 2d animation. We edited the production schedule along with the rest of the class and printed it off in colour and handed it to our lecturer. So i could get ahead of the group i decided to investigate factual programmes and complete that task.
Ralf was in a group with Pete, but as Pete decided to leave the course Ralf decided to join our group to make a group of 4. I was happy that Ralf joined our group as i feel i can work better with Ralf then the people originally in my group. We edited our production schedule once more so that Ralf had an input in our group and he now knew what to do within our group. I have now started my developing ideas for our factual programme.


Week 3:

This week we looked at modes of audience with Claire and got given a certain magazine from all different genres. We then had to write an audience profile of what we think the person reading it might be like, for example my magazine was Woman & Home.

In simons lessons we carried on our investigation into factual programmes and made sure it was completed or nearly completed.
Harrys lesson, we looked at the previous years documentarys and discussed what we liked and disliked about them. Whether they were funny, boring, informative, and quite a few we were confused on what the message actually was.

Week 4:

In Claries lesson this week, we learnt about the effects and different ways the media is published and how it can pursuade people to beleive anything that is in the media.
During Mondays Harry's lesson, we talked about what we know about the different resources that we will be writing about (Budget, Legal and ethical etc). I also started on my target audience document.
Simons lesson we continued on with our investigation within factual programmes as Simon was not in on that day. I also investigated some other factual programmes and documentarys on YouTube.


Week 5:

Today we continued on with Harry's work and also looked at a powerpoint on filming techniques.

In Harry's lesson i continued working on my research tasks. These were to do my target audeince and resources and budget. We also had a team meeting allthough Ashleigh was not here. We discussed about what we should do in our group and how we should ask questions in our documentary, and also decided how we would be doing the other tasks (storyboarding, scripting etc) and if it was really neccesary as we are doing a documentary.

Simons lesson, we learnt about Flash. I really enjoyed this lesson as i am looking forward on getting started with flash and i loko forward to making these projects. I managed to make a ball roll back and forward with a shadow.


Week 6:


This week in Claires lesson, we watched the film "Harry Brown" and discussed about what we thought of it and wrote up an anylisis Week 6:

Week 7 - Half term


Week 8:


This was the first week when we came back from half term.
In Clarie's lesson, we continued our analysis on the movie Harry Brown.
In Simon's lesson we looked at importing images and to make sure they are JPEGs. We used Timeline effects and using transitions. I learnt how to create text and use motion tweens in Flash. I used shape tweens to make diffrerent animations. I used masking and animation masks. Simon showed us some spotlight text at the end of the lesson which gave it a gritty and escaping police look which i liked but did not have time to have a go at this.
Our teacher was ill on Friday so we watched Ghostbusters with another class on that day, and continued in the afternoon with any outstanding work left for our teacher. I booked out the camera for my part of my documentary. I booked it out for the following monday untill Friday. I feel this is enough time for me to film and downlaod my video.


Week 9:

In claires lesson on Monday, we continued with our anylsis of Harry Brown. I managed to complete a draft in the lesson and handed it in.
Our lecturer was ill so we had another teacher teach us. I continued working on any outstanding work i had to do and i also researched other peoples videos.

On Wednesday, i continued on with my investigation into 2D animation. I researched some tutorials on YouTube of flash animation and will use new techniques i have learnt in my actual 2D animation. I also booked out the camera for an extra couple of days so i have more time to download and film. I have now booked it out untill the following Monday.

Our teacher was ill on Friday so we watched Ghostbusters with another class on that day, and continued in the afternoon with any outstanding work left for our teacher. This week, i worked on my presentation in Claires lesson. We were told to make a presentation about the critical approaches to media. We could investigate either a Magazine, video game, tv show, movie. I chose to do a video game and chose Fifa 11.
